Bumper Sticker

So... while out shopping this weekend I saw a bumper sticker on a car and i'm struggling with how to interpret it. I would love your insight. Please comment. I'll comment later... but i want to get a feel for what others are thinking. So this is what it said....

"Feminism is the radical notion that women are people."

There you have it. Let the comment flood gates open.

Ok, well I was with you when you saw it and i think it is a poorly written bumper sticker but i think what they mean is that feminist are trying to get equality and that men in the traditional sense dont consider women on their level and therefore some dont consider them people.

I would say that this a more radical view of feminism, in the sense that those type of feminist want results quicker and see things as far more unequal than more moderate feminists.

I really hope this makes sense and doesnt make me sound bad.

This is a fairly common saying among radfems as far as I can tell. It's really just a pithy way of pointing out that inequality based on gender arises out of and continually fosters a view that one gender is better than the other and thus "more human." They leave off the "more" part because they're making the point that unless we're all counted equally human, then there's bound to be inhumanity that is condoned by those beliefs. Frankly, I agree, even if it is the "shock jock" version of events.

Oh, and you did great, Will.

Feminists are ass-clowns. If they'd start shaving their armpits, maybe someone would take the time to knock them up, and then they wouldn't have so much time on their hands to protest things.

Anyway, thanks for appreciating my liberal use of the term "ass-clown", as a thank-you, I'm trying to work it in to as many comments as I can on your blog...

I can't tell one way or the other what that sticker's supposed to mean, which is a pretty good sign that whatever it meant to say, it has failed miserably. Pffft, women.

Also, please tell James I think I've found his British coounterpart. He's a skinny blonde Pro Writing major, but I swear if you closed your eyes and listen to him it's like James is doing an English accent.

Ok, truth be told, the reason I asked for your comments was partly to make sure I wasn't stupid, and partly to give me time to come up with the words to properly articulate my thoughts. I think i've accomplished the first goal. Everyone seems to agree that the statement is confusing if not "Ass-clown-ish."

As far as articulating my thoughts... not so easily done. When i first read the bumper sticker... i was offended. My interpretation of it was that who ever was driving this car felt that women were not people. Now, I'm no feminist by any means, but that's still offensive.

Will was with me and pointed out that he didn't think i should be offended. That it was actually supposed to be a pro-feminist statement. After considering this angle, I can see that. Obviously, it's a poorly written bumper sticker. Whoever it is that created (and anyone possessing it) is clearly not getting their point across and therefore not accomplishing anything through it.

Unless of course their goal was to make people blog about it... interesting.
